Footwear designer Sarah Flint has introduced a capsule collection inspired by Focus Features’ new film adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility.”
The collection draws on the contrasting personalities of the novel’s Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. It pairs two of the brand’s signature silhouettes with the characters: the “Emma,” described as composed and sensible, for Elinor, and the “Natalie,” described as freer and more romantic, for Marianne.
Both styles are hand-embroidered with a Japanese anemone floral on linen, which the brand said echoes the needlework and textile traditions of the Georgian era.
The collection also includes two hand-painted scarves: the Anemones Scarf, painted by Flint, and the Dashwood Scarf, painted by her long-time collaborator Katarzyna Strozynska-Goraj.
The brand said motifs throughout the collection draw from period embroidery and textile patterns, and the color palette comes from the film’s visual world.
Flint, the designer and founder of her namesake brand, said she has long admired Austen’s novel.
“Anemones are one of the classic English garden flowers, and in the old language of flowers, they mean anticipation,” Flint said. “We hand-embroidered it onto linen, the same slow, careful way women of that era would have worked, one stitch at a time, because printing it would have missed the point.”
“I’ve wanted to do something with this book for years, so when this collaboration came together, it felt like the equivalent of a superfan getting asked to plan a reunion tour,” Flint added. “I didn’t want a shoe with a movie logo slapped on it. I spent real time on where Elinor ends and Marianne begins, down to which thread color went on which shoe.”
The film, directed by Georgia Oakley and written by Diana Reid, follows the sisters as they navigate love, loss, and societal expectations in Georgian England. It stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw. The movie opens in U.S. theaters on Oct. 16.
Focus Features, the film’s distributor, has a 2026 slate that also includes “Werwulf,” directed by Robert Eggers and due on Christmas Day; “The Uprising,” from director Paul Greengrass and starring Andrew Garfield; and “Elsinore,” directed by Simon Stone and starring Andrew Scott.
