A fairy-tale village is about to have a very bad day, thanks to a visitor who has never been known for tiptoeing around.
“Godzilla Stomp!,” a hardcover picture book for ages 4 to 8, went on sale Tuesday from Penguin Young Readers.
Written by Katherine Locke and illustrated by Nikolas Ilic, the story is a comic take on the idea of the Toho Company’s King of Monsters stomping into a fairy tale village, terrifying the classic characters who live there.
The Gingerbread Man is headed to visit the Muffin Man, Little Red Riding Hood is on her way to her grandmother’s house, and Cinderella is getting ready for the Royal Ball. Then Godzilla arrives, and the day’s plans are, understandably, up in the air.

The publisher describes the book as an introduction to the monster for readers who enjoy “a bit of chaos” in their fairy tales. It recommends the book for fans of irreverent picture books such as “Don’t Trust Fish” and “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs.”
Kirkus Reviews gave the book a favorable notice, describing it as “a comedic appetite for destruction (that) offers giggles galore.”
Locke is an author who writes for readers of all ages. Their picture books include “What Are Your Words?: A Book About Pronouns,” “Bedtime for Superheroes,” and “Being Friends with Dragons.” Locke uses they/them pronouns and lives with three cats and one horse, according to the publisher’s biography. None of the animals is reported to be a kaiju.
Ilic is an Emmy Award-winning artist who works in animation and children’s books. A Toronto native, he lives in Los Angeles. His publishing credits include HarperCollins, Random House, Simon & Schuster, Little Tiger, and Happy Yak.
Godzilla Stomp! is a licensed collaboration between Toho and Penguin Random House.
