There could soon be a feature film coming out based on the smash-hit video game CookieRun.
Big Shot Pictures has decided to literally risk it for the biscuit, announcing it has optioned the cinematic rights to adapt CookieRun into a feature-length film. The movie would be developed in partnership with Devsisters, which developed the game and owns the intellectual property.
Big Shot Pictures is a family entertainment company founded by CEO Brian Robbins, which focuses on developing films around entertainment brands and/or creators who have developed a deep and loyal fan base.
For example, Big Shot has recently acquired the Eloise franchise and a 25% stake in Alvin and the Chipmunks through a landmark joint venture with Bagdasarian Productions. A theatrical film is in the works for release in 2028. Big Shot also has a first-look film deal with Sony Pictures.
CookieRun certainly fits Big Shot’s strategic direction. Devsisters was founded in 2007 and has been building the CookieRun universe ever since. The first version of the game, called OvenBreak, was released in 2009, and the game is currently played by more than 350 million people globally. The CookieRun franchise has generated more than $1 billion in revenue since the first version was released.
“We are thrilled to bring a phenomenon as beloved as CookieRun to the big screen,” said Robbins. “Expanding this vibrant world beyond mobile screens into cinema allows us to connect with millions of existing fans while introducing the franchise to new global audiences.
“Big Shot’s expertise in digital-first storytelling and short-form engagement uniquely suits us to amplify the massive online conversation already surrounding these characters.”
CookieRun was inspired by the folk tale The Gingerbread Man, and follows Cookie characters who escape the witch’s oven that brought them to life.
It has since grown into a global entertainment brand that includes the flagship games CookieRun: Kingdom, CookieRun: OvenBreak, and CookieRun: Crumble. The franchise has branched out into licensing with the CookieRun: Braverse trading card game and a variety of licensed merchandise and live experiences. While the game was developed in South Korea, the U.S. is the franchise’s top market, accounting for 65% of global merchandise sales in 2025.
The new film is targeting a 2029 global release, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the franchise’s original game, OvenBreak.
“CookieRun began as a mobile game and has since expanded into new territory, from merchandise and trading cards to live events,” said Kilhyeon Cho, CEO of Devsisters. “At the center of it all is a richly imagined dessert world, home to Cookies who break out of the oven to choose their own fate.”
Cho says he’s looking forward to seeing the game’s story and characters portrayed in a feature film.
“Bringing that world to the big screen expands the CookieRun experience in a way no other medium can,” Cho said. “We hope it gives longtime fans a new way to meet the characters they’ve grown up with, and newcomers a message of courage that stays with them.
“With Big Shot as our partner, we’re excited to share this world with audiences everywhere.”
